Our Approach Is Different
We do things differently at Unet Design. We never force our clients to have ongoing relationships with us, or discourage them from taking ownership of their projects. Instead, we provide free “how to” text and video tutorials to clients, so they feel comfortable making changes to their website. We also make sure they always have unfettered access to their domain registrations, hosting accounts, and any subscriptions that were secured for their project. We leave the unethical, strong-arm tactics to the designers and agencies that don’t care to foster long-standing relationships with their clients. At IT Support LA, we focus on building healthy client relationships based on three core principles: trust, follow-through, and old-school work ethics. Give us a try; you will be impressed.

The following FAQ’s were compiled by our team, and based on the questions most frequently asked by our prospective clients. Feel free to contact us if your question is not on this page.
What is website design?
Basically, this is the art of putting together and implementing all of the elements that go into a website, but putting it in those simple terms is like saying that a heart transplant consists of simply taking out the old heart and putting in a new one. Read the further Q & As for specifics.
How to design a website?
First – do NOT underestimate the value of a great, engaging website. For many potential clients, this is their first glimpse of what you are like as a company. Having a boring, one-page site with some contact information and a paragraph about what you do is almost as bad as having no website at all.
Example: In our early days, when we were just beginning to carve out our place in the IT Support Los Angeles Community, clients expected us to have a website. As time went by, we expanded the site to include ancillary IT services like IT Help Desk, Cybersecurity, Backup & Disaster Recovery, Office Moves, Cloud Migration, VoIP, and White Label Services (IT to IT), among others.
To get started on your own website, simply follow this series of important steps:
1) What is the site for, what do you expect it to accomplish, and how will it accomplish that? These points need to be clearly defined. Are you selling specific items for shipping or downloading, or are you introducing your company’s services, or just want a place to post photos? I presume it is commerce oriented, or you wouldn’t be reading this on a Managed IT Services site. Speaking of which, if you are offering any service, whether it’s IT Support or Bookkeeping, you will want to display the range of services you offer, not just ‘IT consulting services’ or ‘bookkeeping services’. People come to your website for information – give them the opportunity for a ‘deep dive’ into your business.
2) Branding: Depending on how much you have developed your brand, either incorporate your color schemes, fonts, logo and so forth into the website or develop them from scratch. You are looking to develop or cement your brand recognition, and every aspect needs to support the brand. Do not underestimate the power of color – it will become a major part of your brand signature – and boost brand recognition by 80% according to Color Matters.
3) Find a DIY online website building site. If you’re selling line items, find a good ecommerce platform to facilitate your design and user maneuverability. Make it too tedious to negotiate and your buyer may go to another site that makes buying easy.
4) Pick the style and theme – take a look at the latest trends in web design. Once you choose the style, everything on the site needs to serve that style, which in turn MUST serve your brand - not jump around from high-tech graphics to cartoons and such. Pick a lane and drive in it.
5) Create, add, and optimize your content. SEO (Search Engine Optimization is a sub-field of IT Services that specializes in the mostly invisible things on your site that will propel you towards the top of search engines. Unless you have a ton pf spare time and an unlimited supply of headache medicine, it is wise to seek out top-notch consultants who specialize in SEO – and believe me, there are plenty of phonies out there. If in doubt, ask your IT support and services provider for reputable people.
6) Publish your site. Get it out there, but not until you have double-checked everything – bring in a third party – a colleague or willing relative to negotiate the site, making sure the content is readable, understandable, and easy to find. Check to make sure all links are operable. Check the loading speed: Pingdom offers a Website Speed Test – try it out. Make sure your home page is easy to get back to – it should be 1 click away, but never more than 3. Look at your site on different platforms to make sure it looks good on desktop, tablet, and smart phones.
7) Don’t just wind it up, let it go, and walk away. Monitor the website’s data, analyze it, and continue to improve it. Key data factors are: How many page views do you get? What your bounce rate is. How much time users spend on each page. Finally, if you’re selling something online, the bottom line is your conversion rate – what percentage of people who enter the site actually buy?
How much does website design cost?
As with anything, it depends on what you want it to do – how complex the site is and how many pages it includes. Doing it yourself is the cheapest, but there are plenty of services that will build a simple site your specifications, some cheap ($200 to $500), while larger agencies can charge in excess of $15,000. Huge, complex sites from an agency can run $40,000 to $75,000 or more.
What is website design and development?
Although the line between these two terms is often blurred, the layman’s definition is that design is what’s on top – what the user sees: the colors, layout, graphics, etc. Development is what’s underneath: coding languages like HTML, CSS and Javascript which make the buttons work. The developer’s job also includes making sure that all the elements work together seamlessly.
How to design a website layout?
Again, it depends on what you want your site to do. Find a website whose style and fluidity you like and emulate it (don’t just copy it). Choose the elements you respond to and remake them the way you want. Depending on your true abilities as a designer, you may want to hire a professional. The range of pricing is similar to those in previous answers here.
If you do choose to do it yourself, just pay heed to basic design principles. The more you can say in less space, the better. Less busy is usually better. Make sure that navigating the site is logical and intuitive - we have all been on sites so cumbersome that we looked elsewhere.
What should I have when I am ready to start my project?
Knowledge is power. We love it when a client comes to us with their Marketing plan and/or business model. This helps us learn the subtle distinctions that make your business unique. Having a clear understanding of the branding image and voice for the business is also very helpful. If you can, try to present a clear plan of the project that you can share with us, either in text or through illustration. The more information you can share, the more successful the outcome of your project will be.
However, if you don’t have something prepared to show, we recommend meeting with one of our designers for a free consultation. We can help guide you through the planning process, and keep you far away from the common project pitfalls that notoriously drives up the cost and time of a project.
